Why We Agree with The Royal Ballet School’s New Approach to Training
At Steps 2 Stardom, we are always looking for ways to support our students in becoming not only confident performers but also happy, healthy young people. Recently, we were inspired by an announcement from The Royal Ballet School in London—one of the world’s most respected training institutions—that they are changing their full-time intake age from Year 7 (11–12 years old) to Year 9 (13–14 years old).
This decision, grounded in extensive research on early specialisation in sport and performing arts, highlights something very close to our own philosophy here at S2S: children thrive when they are nurtured, not rushed.
What The Royal Ballet School Discovered
The Royal Ballet School’s Head of Teacher Training, Karen Berry, recently shared how new research has reshaped their thinking. Here are the key reasons behind their change—and why they resonate with us so deeply:
Later specialisation supports healthier dancers.
Studies show that young people who diversify their activities before specialising have stronger bodies, fewer injuries, and longer, more sustainable careers.Emotional readiness matters.
Boarding and full-time training at just 11 years old can place heavy emotional demands on children. Waiting until Year 9 gives students more time to grow in confidence and resilience before stepping into such an intensive environment.Well-being comes first.
By delaying full-time entry, the School is prioritising mental health, balance, and overall happiness—values we also hold dear.Opportunities remain rich and supportive.
Students in Years 7 and 8 won’t miss out; instead, they will be guided through enhanced Associate and Scholars programmes. This means they still receive expert training, but with flexibility that allows them to enjoy a wider variety of experiences.
How This Reflects Our Own Philosophy
At Steps 2 Stardom, we couldn’t agree more with this approach. Since our founding, our mission has been clear:
“Empowering Every Child in a Supportive Dance Family.”
Like The Royal Ballet School, we believe that dance training should support the whole child—their confidence, friendships, creativity, and joy—not just their technique. We have always encouraged a balanced pathway where children can explore different styles, grow at their own pace, and feel part of a safe and supportive community.
We see every day how a broad foundation across Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Acrobatics, Musical Theatre, Acting, and more helps our students develop not only as dancers but as adaptable, resilient young people.
Why This Matters for Your Child
Parents often ask, “When is the right time for my child to get serious about dance?” The truth is, the best results come when children fall in love with learning first. Technical excellence and performance skills will come—but only if the journey is positive, safe, and motivating.
By keeping our training family-focused and developmentally appropriate, we’re giving our students the same gift The Royal Ballet School is now offering their dancers: the freedom to grow, the space to enjoy, and the foundation for lifelong success in the arts.
✨ At Steps 2 Stardom, we celebrate this shift in philosophy. It reaffirms what we have always known—children achieve their best when they are supported, not pressured. We’re proud to continue leading with love, encouragement, and opportunities for every dancer to shine in their own time.
